Prof. Brian Yuliarto, Ph.D., is an academic, researcher, and higher education leader who has been serving as the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology since February 19, 2025. With extensive experience in research, innovation, and higher education institutional management, he brings a vision to strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesian universities, enhance the research ecosystem, and accelerate the downstreaming of innovation-based technologies. Born in Jakarta on July 27, 1975, Prof. Brian earned his bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) in 1999, and continued his graduate studies at The University of Tokyo, Japan, where he received his M.Eng. (2002) and Ph.D. (2005) in Quantum Engineering and Systems Science. His expertise in nanomaterials for biosensor, energy, and solar PV applications has established him as one of Indonesia’s leading scientists.
Before his ministerial appointment, Prof. Brian held a long track record in higher education leadership. He served as Vice Rector for Research and Innovation at ITB (2025), where he played a key role in strengthening research strategies and international collaborations. Previously, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Industrial Technology at ITB (2020–2025), overseeing academic programs and curriculum development aligned with Industry 4.0.
He also led ITB’s Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Research Center (2018–2020), where he spearheaded high-impact research initiatives and fostered synergy between academia, industry, and government to accelerate technology commercialization. As a researcher, Prof. Brian has published over 343 Scopus-indexed scientific papers, accumulating more than 6,043 citations and achieving an H-index of 40. His achievements have garnered numerous international accolades. Among his most prestigious honors is the 2024 Habibie Prize in engineering—widely regarded as the highest distinction for Indonesian scientists and engineers. He has also been named the Top 1 Researcher in Nanoscience & Nanotechnology in Indonesia. Other recognitions include being awarded ITB’s Distinguished Lecturer in Science and Technology (2017) and Best Researcher at ITB (2021). Moreover, he has been consistently listed in Stanford University’s World’s Top 2% Scientists for three consecutive years (2022, 2023, and 2024), reaffirming his status as one of the most influential scientists globally.
